Careers Search

0 Search Results for What do astronomers work on throughout their Careers?
I want to know more about astronomy as a career in action.
There are very few Jobs in astronomy if you don’t have a PhD in astronomy or physics, and not that many even if you do. Astronomers work for colleges and universities, national labs and observatories, and NASA. Most are employed by colleges; NASA hires more engineers than scientists, and there’s very little in the way of industry in astronomy. Astronomers do research – they might run telescopes or satellites, collect data, reduce and analyze data to discover something new, or do theory – modeling systems on the computer or using a pencil and paper to try to predict what will happen or explain what we observe happening. Some astronomers also teach classes, and many (not just those at colleges) have students working with them on their research. Some astronomers build or maintain instruments on telescopes and satellites for other astronomers to use in their research. And most spend a few weeks a year traveling to observing sites, conferences, and to meet with collaborators. As part of my work as an astrophysicist, I’ve visited more than 10 countries in Europe and South America.
