Tennessee Making The Investment For The Future   by Natasha Bright

Usually, when people from Tennessee apply for scholarships, they go for the in-state Educational Lottery program aka HOPE Scholarships. This is a good start, but not only will they probably not pay all of their tuition, but they also come with some hefty restrictions; i.e. only being able to enroll in an in-state educational institution.

What a Tennessee student must always keep in mind is while a HOPE is a good start; there are many more scholarships out their right in the state. In fact, if you go to Tennessee’s Board of Educational website, you’ll find an incredible number of them.

A good example of this is the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars program. It is a national program that is moderated by each school’s restrictions. In Tennessee’s case, a high school graduate needs a cumulative average of 3.5 or better. If they earn a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49, they still have a shot; as long as their ACT score is 24 score or they score 1090 or better on the SAT. The selected, the recipient gets $1,500 annually to his/her school of choice.

Then, there is the General Motors Automotive Educational Scholarship Program. It is open to Hispanic students who want to pursue Careers as auto technicians. If accepted, they will receive $2,500 a year to go to an approved technical and automotive center.

Another national program is one provided by a prominent beverage company. It is open to any high school student who has intentions of making a career in the arts, business, education or government. Applicants must also have a 3.0 GPA or better. If they meet initial criteria, they will be flown to the beverage maker’s corporate center, Atlanta, for a full interview. At that time, 50 candidates will be named National Finalists and receive a $20,000 scholarship. An additional 200 will receive $10,000.

Another national program is the Christa McAuliffe Scholarship. To qualify for this, a student must have a 3.75 GPA, and be enrolled for an education degree. If selected, the student gets a supplemental scholarship of $500 a year. He/she must also commit to teaching inside the state after graduating.

Now if you are thinking of a career in wildlife preservation or something related, and also happen to be a citizen of the state of Tennessee, Alabama or Mississippi, the Bird Dog Foundation has a contest that might be of interest to you. Each year, they set up a series of subjects to write on, and the top two essays will be awarded scholarships of $1,500 for first place and $1,000 for second. This prize can be used towards any school of choice.
